1. Rainforest layers: Forest floor 0-3ft. Lower story 3-100ft. Canopy 100-165ft.
2. The Amazon rainforest provides 25% of the world’s oxygen. Many people use the rainforest.
Six groups of people who are interested in the rainforest
1. Indigenous Peoples: locals, home is the Amazon for 12,000 years; many don’t know the outside world. Brazil wants to develop interior of their country. Indigenous people have learned with governments.
2. Rubber Tappers: Collect sap from certain trees that grow in the rainforest. They make diagonal cuts in the bark; it doesn’t hurt the forest. It is sustainable. Rubber Tappers live in the Amazon. They want to stop the widespread clearing of trees.
3. Loggers: Harvest trees for wood products. Variety of trees=large supplier of all types of furniture. Loggers clear-cut whole patches of rainforest. They help cause deforestation.
4. Settlers: Brazil government encourages poor people to move to the rainforest. Settlers have found it hard to farm in Amazon. Opposition has grown against them as they take more and more land.
5. Cattle Ranchers:
